Meath Street is a mecca of knock-off Nikes, bales of toilet-roll and hooky ‘duty-free’ smokes. It is the fons et origo of ‘stolen or stale.’ Nothing much has changed here in 30 years. It is what it is, and we thought it always would be. Then last week we spied through the papered-over windows of a shop under renovation and saw blonde wood, cork surfaces and a shiny new coffee machine. Could it be? Yes, it is: a great new neighbourhood coffee shop with an interior that would make Stoneybatter blush. The congenial French owner, Damien, bakes everything himself and has plans to expand the lunch offering from sandwiches very soon. An ex-aeronautical engineer was slinging the flat-whites when we visited last. This place totally lives up to the name. Bravo! / Mr & Mrs Stevens
