How much?

Sunset Song is a film by Terence Davies, an adaptation of the novel by Lewis Grassic Gibbon. It is set in the 1900s, somewhere rural in Aberdeenshire in Scotland, a setting the film takes pains to point out, through shots of the landscape indulgent enough to be described as ‘lyrical’ by some and ‘too much’ by others. Displayed against the seemingly permanent beauty of the place are the fickle circumstances of its people, particularly those of Chris Guthrie, a young woman whose dreams of a life other than what she has now—a life largely circumscribed by a father who says things like, ‘You are my flesh and blood, and I can do with you what I wish’—soon end when she is left to look after their farm. She meets a man named Ewan, who brings her some joy, but who is later sent off to war, much to the despair of Chris, and to the indifference of the landscape. / Olen Bajarias
