The much loved Elbow frontman sheds his regular band members for this debut solo outing. Rest assured Garvey remains the lyrical anchor to edge of town life. Courting the Squall continues with his astute jotter-book observational notes enabling him to simultaneously wrench matters of the heart whilst finding the valve to let off hope. There’s big bluesy bombastic piano moments on the likes of Yesterday where he’s a “diligent village idiot toeing the line but watching for a sign” and more plaintive notes on the jazzy plush velvet lyrics of Electricity where he duets with Jolie Holland. There’s a sense of freedom from the regular weight of expectation now attendant with Elbow offerings with his BBC6 Music show influences more to the fore. However, one constant remains and that is how damn engaging Garvey is a frontman and how much dearly loved he is. / Michael McDermott
