Rough Magic’s biannual Seeds programme is an opportunity to nuture and assist the next generation of theatre practitioners. With the ensemble piece Enjoy, Zoe Ní Riordáin directs the Irish premiere of a 2006 play by Japanese playwright Toshiki Okada which is set in the basement of a manga comic book store in the Shinjuku district of Tokyo. Okada is ultimately exploring the “expression of feelings with words” but with deadpan hilarity amongst an overeducated and underemployed hipster set. Trite words gush with profundity, the mundanity of existence is elevated into rewarding drama in this clever production. There’s borderline self-indulgence familiar to anyone once afflicted by the egotism of being young and self-indulgent. There’s a karaoke booth upstairs and a spillover with performances where hits such as With or Without You and Faith are sponged down by the everyday concerns of this young, attractive and endearing cast. The set is simple. The choreography minimal enabling tweaks and twitches to be memorably amplified. An inspired choice and as refreshing as the first scent of a cherry blossom in spring. / Michael McDermott
