R.S.A.G.
Putting paid to the notion that the only good thing to come out of Kilkenny is the hurling team, Jeremy Hickey is fast becoming the Marble City’s most exciting export. Since assuming the RSAG moniker Hickey has wasted little time in setting out his stall. His unquenchable desire for change means that just when we think we have a grasp on what he’s doing he has taken off somewhere else. His third long player, _Be It Right Or Wrong_ builds on the promise of previous releases. The chameleonic nature of his music is matched by his live show. On the last tour, through the use of visuals and samples Hickey was the centerpiece of both his own virtual band and a strobe-lit video installation. He has promised something different this time. Quite simply, Irish music acts don’t come much more thrilling than this. Win Tickets / Brian Keane

Lucky Dragons
Lucky Dragons anomalous approach to performance has seen them indulge in various installations, interactive shows, spontaneous be-ins and drawing circles, yet the centre of this creative vortex still lies the West Coast psychedelic tie-dyed sonic tapestries of Luke Fischbeck and Sarah Rara. Their non-conformist approach to composition and recording gives their music a unique freewheeling, unstructured momentum, and similarly in their live shows they espouse a hippieish communion between artist and audience drawing on the room's collective energy to create an experience that is both unquantifiable and ecstatic. Seemingly on this interminable blissed-out journey of discovery, Lucky Dragons are always happy to pick up a more converts along the way. Win Tickets / Mark Keane

Our Little Secrets & David O’Doherty
Cheese on toast, Knight Rider and Kit, music and comedy. Some things go well together. Our Little Secrets, fresh from supporting The Villagers, headline this double act. The Dublin-based band are led by Rhob Cunningham who has played with the likes of BellX1, Lisa Hannigan and Cathy Davey – the latter two providing guest vocals on the debut album. Cunningham has been compared to Josh Ritter and Damien Rice but OLS really have their own sweet melodies and laid back sounds. Opening for the band is someone who is definitely making his own sound, one he describes as ‘very low energy musical whimsy’. The D O’D is one of Ireland’s top comedians with crazy hair and a Casio keyboard, giving us such gems as ‘sent a text to the person the text was about’, while correcting any misconceptions we had about Pandas. Capital Forwarding Solutions
Not a seminar by a financial adviser but rather an exciting site specific installation. It's hosted in a brand new space called The Paper Store on Upper Sheriff St in a warehouse that dates from the 1900s that housed paper for the Irish Press. It's presenting the work of Italian artist Paolo W. Tamburella who recently completed a residency in the stunningly redeveloped Model in Sligo as well as exhibiting at the Venice Biennale. Finally, it's curated by Aoife Tunney whose work.in.space project worked wonders on Connaughton House, a space "left in a post-boom paralysis", last year. Citing 'modernization, global mobility and human condition' as key facets of interest, there will be 10m long watercolour paintings, a video projection floating in water and a shipping container from the docklands as a sculptural piece. / Zach Joyce

Indian Film Festival
I have brought over 500 Indian films to Irish cinema for over a decade. The idea is to make them more mainstream and introduce people to the global appeal and popularity of Indian cinema so it seemed a natural progression to organically plant another seed in the form of a dedicated film festival. Three strands have been created. The first focuses on the work of Prakash Jha, a prolific and highly acclaimed director. The second features remakes and the third is a diasporas' film makers' slot including the debut film of Sangeeta Dutta from London and a mini retrospective of rising Indian film star Gul Panag. There are over 22 films in total with four being introduced by their directors as well as two seminars, a masterclass and gala charity dinner which will raise funds for an orphanage called WAIT in Dehli. / Siraj Zaidi - Festival Director

Karin Brunnermeier
There is no doubt that Karin Brunnermeier has a sense of humour. Whether it’s darker than first imagined is up to the onlooker. Her _Ring Clown_ piece for a couple of years ago (a clown squashed face down under a huge metal ring) had me laughing out loud, but could just as easily freak someone else out. That probably says more about clowns that her work though. This time round, Brunnermeier is offering up a show that plays out physical dramas of the human condition in everyday life scenes. There is playfulness with the physical norms though. One female image has a neck all elongated and twisted, the character with a look of sheer ennui with her deformity another has a Medusa amount of snakes around her feet. My own favourite is the doll head propped up on seven wheeled arms. Like a sterile toy for young girls of the future. Worth a visit. / Luka Scoones

Garbage, the City and Death
‘Singing is all about sexual confidence’. One of the first things I did when I read the cast list for Rainer Werner Fassbinder's _Garbage, the City and Death_ was think ‘Just what have I come to see?’ In order of appearance, there’s a Nazi drag-queen father, a dominatrix, a junkie, a schoolgirl and consumptive prostitutes, a violent pimp some repressed homosexual, and a rich jew – get the idea? I didn't. Coming from the play someone said 'You won’t forget that?' and he was right. This is an incredibly brave production by Plastic Theatre, one they should be commended for. What is it about? End of war Frankfurt, prostitutes, power, property and people. People's place in society and what they think they have to do for love. Great acting, lighting and songs. The last one especially. Go with an open mind. Win Tickets / Darragh Doyle

Stephen Dubner
Freakonomics, co-written by Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner was one of those non-fiction, must-read books that proved so popular over the last decade. Think of Naomi Klein's No Logo or Malcolm Gladwell's The Tipping Point. Each generation has them – Chariots of the Gods, The Doors of Perception, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. These books, and their authors, seem to garner as many fans and followers as they do critics and detractors. Using economic theory to analyse the unorthodox, Levitt and Dubner presented far-out microeconomic studies of everything from cheating schoolteachers to why drug-dealers like to live with their moms, and perhaps most controversially – how abortion helped to reduce crime rates. They returned in 2009 with a sequel – Superfreakonomics – with freshly squeezed counter-intuitive data. Win Tickets / Simon Judge

The Middle East
So, here's the thing about The Middle East. They're one of those bands that come very close to proving that old 'writing about music is like dancing about architecture' adage that music writers tend to loathe. Trying to describe their sound seems a little redundant in the face of the multitude of the noises they get out of their multitude of instruments, but let’s try anyway. It's a beautifully distilled mix of plucked guitars, harmonised vocals, handclaps, clangs, and whoops that will leave you with a newfound love for the let's-try-everything motif so beloved of indie music at the moment. It's likely to be one of the most mesmerising gigs in Dublin this year. Don’t miss it, even if you find yourself dancing about architecture afterwards. / Shane Culloty

We Built This City
Do you ever look at your kids and think of Godzilla? Is your little tyke a rampaging force of destruction, hell-bent on breaking apart the very fabric of your life? We Built This City is threatening to unleash a whole army of Godzilla’s, with children and their families using thousands of cardboard boxes to design and build a cardboard city before razing it to the ground to the sound of hundreds of little stamping feet. It’s all environmentally friendly and will only set you back a fiver per monster, sorry, child. Now you can tell that suspiciously reptilian-like creature in your living room to put down the priceless Ming vase, their inner demons dreams are about to be made. If only we had this outlet a few years ago for a certain baby Bush, we could have saved our friends across the water a whole lot of trouble. / Hugh Torpey

The Kitchen Nightclub Reunion
Those of a certain vintage, namely clubbers from 1994-2002, will certainly know what was cooking in The Kitchen nightclub. As part of Bono's Clarence Hotel, it was briefly hip and happening and along with the POD's Chocolate Bar represented the somewhat trendier edge of clubbing replete with the ubiquitous silly water feature - a moat in this instance. It was also undoubtedly a sweatbox and home to some great hedonism including Shay Hannon and Hugh Scully's 'Blue' on a Wednesday night. Tonight, there's a reunion for the old crew who now mostly spend more time spinning babies clothes in the dryer than vinyl on a platter. So do make sure you open the doors for them, put your hands up in the air, have a little gurn and leave your own kids with the grandparents! / Zach Joyce

Dublin Zombie Walk
Stumbling around, jaws agog with patchy skin, raw red eyes and a look of glazed over hunger. No! I'm not talking about the feral types who piss around town at 3am pawing at the windows of Burger King while decorating Dublin's stunning streets with vomit. I'm talking about what to expect when Romero lovers congregate to honour the living dead by...dressing up as the living dead. You can take part by doing just that, though make up artists, disease control types and heroes are also needed. If you're not gonna join 'em, maybe you can try and kill 'em.* It hasn't been updated in a while, but at least now you'll have fodder for the Dublin Zombie Survival Guide.*le cool does not endorse the killing of zombie walk participants. Unless you find actual zombies taking part, in which case...some vinyl to the face allegedly works well. / Lauren Crothers

Alden Tyrell
As a habitué of the coalface of modern italo and electro, Dutch master Alden Tyrell has garnered critical praise for chaperoning a re-emergence of a new and vital take on a classic synth-based sound. Releases such as Love Explosion and Rendezvous At Rimini channel the contemporary urge for pulsating rhythms while simultaneously paying heed to the ingrained musicality and melody of 80s electronic compositions, retaining much of the nuanced craftsmanship while giving the dancefloor something to blow-up on. His collaborated work with DJ Overdose on The Hasbeens, and with Dexter, Egyptian Lover and Jamie Jupitor, on The Clone Machine, has also highlighted his innate relationship with italo, electro and beyond. Dublin Pride Parade
In May, Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga were jailed in Malawi for 14 years for being in a loving, committed relationship. Their recent pardoning (granted under duress) will do little to soothe a sting felt around the globe. Prop 8 and a porous Civil Partnership Bill are part of a long list of reminders that we are not where we should be. At the heart of this year's Pride Festival is the message that 'We Are Family Too' – and you don't have to be a dyke with a tyke to yell that message loud and clear through the streets of Dublin. Everyone has the right to be as happy – or miserable – as their parents. Are your vocal chords in working order? Good. USE THEM. Be angry for what you, your friends, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, mothers and fathers don't legally have yet. Yet. And remember to celebrate the shit out of what you do. / Lauren Crothers

Charlie Chaplin - Cinema in the Park
There is much to say about Charlie Chaplin and the great humanitarian effort that was his laughter making. Shot through with pure tenderness, and kindness and love at its very base; a side-splitting, tear inducing, slap-your-thigh version of an incredibly poetic humanity. Catch him performing in the film he most wanted to be remembered for. Slapstick, heart-breaking and warming at the same time, it's difficult to watch for all Chaplin's haphazard moves; difficult to turn away from for his grace and his elegance. This is an opportunity to melt and laugh until you cry in communal appreciation of a timeless genius. In true community spirit, don’t leave no rubbish, be nice to everyone; be awe struck and entertained by the very best under a hopefully benevolent Dublin sky. / Jeanette Farrell

H.U.G.S.
Are you a squeezer? An arm-locker? God forbid, a back-patter? What does your approach to hugging say about you? Dublin-based artist Emma Wade is setting out to explore the science, and indeed pseudo-science, of cuddles with her new exhibition, Human Utopian Generation System. Why has the Free Hugs movement been so successful? Has our migration into cyberspace left us craving genuine physical contact? Wade considers these questions and invites you to stop by the Exchange Gallery and try on a 'H.U.G.S. Jacket', to see if the positive effects of a human embrace can be replicated by a machine. On Sunday, she'll lead a workshop, offering an insight into how the jackets were made and inviting participants to help craft a giant collective hugging jacket. Try to wean yourself off those back-pats before then. / Joey Kavanagh

Love, Birds and War
The old SS Michael and John that is the current home of Smock Alley Theatre is the perfect place to watch a choir perform. An old church with natural acoustics and thick, solid walls to insulate the audience from outside forces, like everyday life, it is the perfect space for escape for a couple of hours into the splendour that is the National Chamber Choir. Generally regarded as Ireland's most innovative choral ensemble, those who saw them perform Rothko Chapel will know that they are capable of seemingly impossible feats with ease and perfect pitch. Performing a collection of French music about love, birds and war, Ireland and France are working once again in perfect harmony; burying the hatchet and offering the olive branch after such a miserable, humiliating, and childish trip to South Africa. Shame. Win Tickets / Jeanette Farrell

Outsiders
Journalist, broadcaster, soothsayer and mid-90s winner of 'Ireland's Next Top Economist', David McWilliams adds theatre to his heavyweight belt. This 90-minute take on our economic crisis is lucid, entertaining and most shocking when it comes to the figures and the ‘insiders’ who remain in the system. Watch our €85bn national debt clock, dismay that the €17bn + spent on Anglo Irish Bank matches what we received from the EU in 30 years. A few of his ‘man of the people’ jokey moments feel strained given his own circumstances but the presentation is strongest recounting the stigma his dad experienced on the dole or the madness of the boom - ‘Little Harvard' creche in Naas anyone? His solutions: scrap NAMA and Anglo, tap our diaspora and the US money in the IFSC. Be a clever clogs by being an ‘Insider’ on this. / Zach Joyce

Whatever Works
As soon as you see the poster for Whatever Works; that familiar font, and Larry David's face, you know that this might be special, and it is. Woody originally wrote the screenplay in the seventies, and the protagonist Boris Yelnikoff was supposed to be played by the late great Zero Mostel. However, Mostel would have approved of Larry David, who brilliantly inhabits the misanthropic Yelnikoff; part hypochondriac, and part loner. Yet the runaway Melodie (Evan Rachel Wood) challenges his isolation with her innocent take on the world, which initially repels Yelnikoff, then confuses him, and finally educates him to understand that people need people – whatever works. Woody is back disseminating what really makes life worth living; it is akin to his list at the end of Manhattan, simple, searching, soulful (and funny, of course). Win Tickets / Siobhán Kane

Norbert Schwontkowski - Dirty
The best thing about Berlin is that it is cheap enough for the artist to survive there. There is no need to bend to commercial pressures because you can live and eat and support yourself on next to nothing. I don’t know how healthy Norbert Schwontkowski's bank balance is, but to be honest, I don’t think he - yet another artist inhabitant of the German capital - is in it for the geld. The best ones rarely are. His mainly simple works of pulverized pigments and plain, almost drab colours are ergonomic and effective for the onlooker. Blatant nods to Picasso are to be found with the cubist, multi-eyed characters but his better works are the shadowy landscapes and images that are grabbed from surreal dreams. The Kerlin Gallery has been quietly going about its business of good exhibitions and this is no different. / Luka Scoones

Midnight Cowboy
Released in 1969 and directed by British director John Schlesinger, Midnight Cowboy remains one of modern American cinema’s finest offerings. It tells the story of two lost souls coming together against a backdrop of prostitution, poverty and isolation. Ratso Rizzo (Dustin Hoffman) is a sickly, destitute and wily New Yorker who in a chance meeting with the newly arrived and naive Texan Joe Buck (John Voight), attempts to extort the trusting Texan for everything he’s worth. What results is the unlikely companionship and poignant tragic drama of two down and out anti-hero drifters who become powerfully bonded together. Those who enjoyed the Lenny Abrahamson film Adam and Paul will surely love this movie. As an extra enticer, Abrahamson himself will be on hand to discuss how this film has inspired and affected his own film making. Win Tickets / Durwyn Mongey

Ha'Penny Bridge
Until the Millennium Bridge opened in 2000, the Ha’Penny Bridge was Dublin’s only pedestrian bridge. For almost two hundred years it has served millions of busy feet and become an iconic image of the city. It’s one of the few things that costs less now than in the good ol’ days, as people had to pay a toll of half a penny to the businessman who funded its construction. Before this, their only options were to take a chance on the leaky ferries he operated, or a long walk. W B Yeats campaigned for the bridge to be turned into an art gallery. I think he might approve of how, beautifully lit, it lends a shimmering reflection to the night river. It’s now one of the oldest cast iron bridges in the world and, if the bustling crowd doesn’t bowl you over, a great place to pause to take in the view. / Shirley Chance

Angel - Festival Man
*Angel Luis Gonzalez Fernandez is the Spanish maestro behind the inaugural PhotoIreland Festival which runs on July 1-11.*
I'd been living here since 1988. I graduated from a photography course in DIT in 2007. Then in September 2008 I left and sold everything and moved to Zurich. While there I did research on festivals abroad.
The germ of the festival is that after college there is fuck all to do really. If you finish as a painter or a sculptor, immediately, you can do an exhibition and sell work. When I opened an account for the festival, the bank manager asked me if I would be doing weddings.
Most international festivals have a theme and curator but this year we decided against a theme unlike an ideal festival like Format. For the first decade we are going to have work hard to make people see photography in a different way. Next year we are going nationwide.
