As the curtain drew closed on the city theatrics that was Bloomsday yesterday, its star player, Senator David Norris, confirmed (again) that he was going to run for President of Ireland.

At a time when the government's popularity is at an all time low and the main opposition chooses to collapse, we treat his reminder as a ray of sunshine in grim Irish political climate.

Whether he is campaigning for equality and civil rights, steeping himself - and those around him - in Dublin culture, or simply just being hilarious, Senator Norris connects with people.

His wit, charm and progressive nature would make for an excellent president, someone we could be really proud of, someone with his own sense of Pride.

Not that we have a problem with the last crop of Irish presidents, we just think it’s time for someone who is not called Mary.

But what's all this we hear about problems with his candidature? Beware, beware, ye statesmen, emperors, and thrones, for le cool magazine has its eye upon you!

Who wants to cast his vote right now - Ciaran or Michael?

Dublin Sketchers

Sketch! In some parts of Dublin, on the urgent utterance of that simple word, young fellas, grown men and gougers will seek cover. They fear a teacher, a wife or the Gardai have been spotted and they scarper like bugs from under a lifted rock. There is little use in running away from this show though. The Dublin Sketchers have been filling their notepads and sketch-books with Dublin scenes for over a year now, finding new spots every Sunday to cast their eyes over. Anyone can join with members ranging from the hobbyist to those already working in the creative fields but there is strictly no snootiness allowed. This exhibition is the culmination of a year's worth Sunday sketching and among my favourites were Tracy O'Brien's ink blocks, Tom Galvin's storyboards and the incredible intricate work of Japanese-born Kozue Graham. / Luka Scoones

Street Performance World Championship

The AIB Street Performance World Championship sure aint your ordinary day in the park. It's bizarre, nuts, manic, fruit loopily funny and well some of the acts are just downright bonkers! Wouldn't it be a dull world altogether if it weren't for the little children out there who wanted to grow up to hammer objects in their heads, twist their bodies through tennis rackets, catch fruit on their faces or skateboard through fire rings. And if you want to personally be a part of the madness then head up to the Pepper Canister Church around 1.30pm on Sunday where 1500 bums are needed on space hoppers (those pre-nineties giant gym balls with antennae) to break a Guinness world record. Everyone has a thing to say about last year so I’m more than curious to see what this year holds. / Tara Power

Scope Magazine

So I hear Time magazine looks great on the iPad? Did you read this weeks New Yorker on the Kindle? Or maybe you just checked the latest Irish Times feeds on your Android powered phone? Digesting dazzling content delivered digitally by magazines and newspapers at no cost (for now) is part of our daily routine. Witness the thing of beauty you are now reading, this has been executed with some finesse for over a year now. Well, over at DIT, we decided to go a little old school and to do one of those paper and ink publications - a printed magazine. Combining the beliefs and ideas of 21 resolutely individual writers might seem as difficult as picking a team from a World Cup squad made up entirely of Eric Cantonas. Pop along, pick up a copy, and see how our first team performed. / Simon Judge

Mexico v France

Dublin’s resident Lucha Libre legend, Pablo Picante will take on the cheating, thieving, dasher of Irish hopes, Thierry Henry this Thursday when Mexico play France in the World Cup. Pablo will be throwing everything he has at the French team, Jose Cuervo Mojitos, mini-burrittos and it's all free if you proudly wear green to the Sugar Club. (Mexico's kit is also green.) After the game, Joe Americano will play a celebratory Mexican DJ set until close. So rather than wallow in the depths of World Cup despair, don your Irish green and make your way to the Sugar Club to see Mexico take it to France. Fingers (and hands) crossed this game leaves a sweeter taste in our mouths. See ju there muchacha. / Di Tansey

A Journey into the Heart of Venezuela

Bokassa declared himself Emperor of the Central African Republic. Pinochet flew his enemies out to the middle of the Pacific and threw them in. Niyazov decided to build a palace of ice in the desert. And their successor as mad tyrant of the globe? Hugo Chavez? The man the Americans tried to overthrow but was reinstated by a working class people’s revolution on the streets of Caracas. An event which is one of the greatest moments for democracy of the 21st Century. The reason you have heard of Chavez, and not Niyazov, is because he has oil and is in no rush to give it to us. Mad bastard that he is. Perhaps this analysis is trite. But there is no denying there is a grassroots movement spreading throughout South America, and it’s only by taking that fact seriously that one can assess the relative pros and cons of Senor Chavez. / Niall Murphy

NCAD End of Year

Before I went to the NCAD Graduate Show on Friday, I had little idea what went on in it, and having seen it, I’m wishing I’d studied there. Their showcase of the best of the graduate’s work in a wide variety of disciplines – from sculpture to ceramic, from fine print to industrial design – gave me both respect for new artists, given the talent on display, and an equally profound feeling of “wtf” as I tried, often in vain, to understand just what I was looking at. Memorable pieces include Ross Coghlan’s 3D newspaper, Youseff Sarhan’s city signs, the beautiful typography of Shonagh Crosbie’s work and the affirming retail packaging one artist has created. There’s a lot to see – to do it properly, take at least an afternoon. You’re sure to find something you’ll like. / Darragh Doyle

The Trailer of Bridget Dinnigan

Dylan Tighe approached the Blanchardstown Traveller Development Group with the idea of rewriting _The House of Bernada Alba_ , a play which he had just translated from Spanish to English. My first question was why a Traveller interpretation? He had said that he was always interested in doing something about Travellers and this play with the similarities of customs in religion, family and tradition seemed relevant. This play is a reflection of these in a contemporary context. It is of a culture that is under constant attack and is not static. The play deals with inter-family tensions, forced settlement, and the challenges of living within the extended family. The play is funny in parts and is sad, positive and negative at the same time but it is at all times from a Traveller's perspective. Win Tickets / Catherine Joyce

Kenny Rogers

So, I understand my good friend Kenny Rogers is coming to Dublin. I dont know who is going to enjoy themselves the most, you or Kenny. Kenny is one of the greatest singers that has ever lived and has some of the greatest songs - or in his case, hits - ever recorded. Kenny is warm, friendly and very personable. You will feel like you know him personally. Since the folks in Dublin always feel like family to me, it should be more of a lovefest going on than a show. I'm sure you will make him feel as welcome as you always have me. I would highly recommend that you go out and watch Kenny. PS. You can tell me later if he has spoken well of me, ha! / Dolly Parton

Bok Bok

Bok Bok is quite the busy bee – he’s a DJ, VJ, producer and graphic designer, and he’s performing at Fabric in London and off-Sonar in the next few weeks. Happily, he’s also managed to fit in a slot in Dublin to bring his inventive, diverse, heavy bass sound to our appreciative ears. His tracks and mixes cover a broad range of electronic dance music: garage, funky, bassline, acid, grime and broken house all feature. He’s being shipped over by Ignored Playaz, who run a night that brings in international acts from the more adventurous (and ignored, presumably) end of the dance music spectrum. “Ignored” doesn’t seem quite right in this context, given that BBC and Fabric are taking notice, but on the other hand, this particular flavour of dance music gets rather limited exposure in Dublin. Popical Island

With Christina Aguilera making disastrous (but hilarious) attempts at channeling The Prodigy, Lady Gaga's _Alejandro_ being greeted with a frosty reception and that long-awaited N*Sync reunion looking increasingly unlikely, pop music is in a bad way. Fret not, however. A team of wiley Irish indie-pop heroes have joined forces to combat the malignant forces of 'dubstep', 'chillwave' and 'folk-tronica' and forge the way for a new incarnation of pop. Among their ranks are Yeh Deadlies, Feed the Bears, Squarehead and Groom. With their powers combined, they are Popical Island and are launching their first assault on the charts and our hearts with the release of their debut compilation today, as well as a free all-day gig featuring most of the album's featured artists. Come join the revolution. / Joey Kavanagh

Apocalypse As Soon As You Hear

The Four Horsemen are on their way, the seventh seal has opened, the sky is darkening and Francis Ford Coppola is waiting in the wings to make a hit film about it all. The end of the world is nigh and what are you gonna do about it? If you haven't got a panic room and you can't find that packet of iodine tablets that your Mammy stored away in case of nuclear warfare, there's not really much you can do but dance the night away. The folks at Come As Soon As You Hear invite you out for one final knees-up before the meteor/plague of locusts/zombies take over. Pony Kids will be on DJ duty, providing the soundtrack as you prepare to meet your maker. Dress in your finest apocalyptic attire, take advantage of the fatally cheap drink deals and dance, dance, dance 'til you're dead. / Paula Lyne

Dalkey Book Festival

Allowing outsiders, just this once, to walk down their gold-paved streets, the residents of Ireland's most famous celebrity habitat are opening up their village for the first Dalkey Book Festival. In fairness, they do have a bit of history behind them; Joyce, Yeats and Flann O’Brien were all writers who lived or located their works in the town. The festival line-up includes guided literary walks, photography exhibitions, poetry readings and talks with local best-selling writers such as Joseph O'Connor and Maeve Binchy while the heavyweight journalist, Robert Fisk, will debate politics with Vincent Browne. Attempting to erase the memory of the 'Hand of Frog' is the special Italia '90 night hosted by Des Cahill, Declan Lynch and Eamon Dunphy, which will move over to The Club bar for a night of green-eyed, flag-waving nostalgia. / Hugh Torpey

Wrinkly's Playhouse

Meet Elizabeth McGuire-Cleary (BA Hons Media) who graduated last Friday from NCAD. Oh and she's 73. Tucked away on the second floor of the Harry Clarke building you'll find Elizabeth's fascinating graduate show, an 'unvarnished self-portrait'. A hoarder over the past 50 years, Wrinkly's Playhouse unveils a lifetime treasure trove from her attic in Tallaght. Comptometer sheets, a bread knife, souvenirs, badges, clothes, beach spades, books and countless other wonders from her life and that of her parents. Elizabeth will tell you how she decided to go to art college when she was 60 and how knocking around with young people has given her a whole new lease of life. She'll show you the CCTV feed on her attic, videos she has shot and tell you about how Ilya Kabakov is an influence in terms of how she labels her objects. An inspiration. / Zach Joyce

DIT Photography Graduates

Now, Bloomsday was probably the best day ever to have a snoop round the BAC. Sunshine so strong it blocked out all the bad bits, people literally whaling opera by the side of the street, and proclamations of love abound from men in straw hats and linen suits. Such was the scene outside the Gallery of the Photography where much of the festivities were taking place while inside lurked an enormous, boundless, enthusiastic talent of another kind in the form of the DIT Photography Graduate Exhibition. Maybe the easiest and most pleasant of the grad shows currently doing the rounds; frivolous and beautiful on the surface with lofty explanations attached to satisfy both the fickle and the earnest. Some really incredible images coupled with a combined couple of centuries of knowledge imparted and just a few hearts on sleeves. Lovely. / Jeanette Farrell

One Day for Rehab

For 365 days a year Rehab support those who are marginalised and those with disabilities across a range of services. It only seems right that for one day, today, people are asked to show their support back to Rehab and try and raise some cash to ensure the continuation of these services. This is the first time that the independent not-for-profit organisation has focused its fundraising appeal on a national basis, so expect to see many initiatives around the city and plenty of people running events to help out. Among the events are a book launch, an art and photography expo and a sponsored cycle. Companies, corporations and individuals are doing their bit. I even see on twitter someone called Suzy Griffen is even giving up chocolate for the day. Honest to goodness work. (Full list of events HERE) / Luka Scoones

Philip Glass

Phillip Glass is undoubtedly one of the behemoths of modern composition so seeing him perform this solo piano show is an opportunity one should not pass up. Few have captured the sturm und drang, globalisation and isolation of modern living in musical form as Glass has done over the last forty years. Consistently at the vanguard of new forms of expression be it through movie scores, operas, theatrical pieces, or stand alone compositions, Glass has consistently challenged the status quo while remaining true to the tenets of his craft, a situation that has seen him both revered inside and outside the establishment. Here he will introduce and perform a program selected from his works from 1976 to present, in what is surely to be a compelling evening. / Mark Keane

The Big Four

A generation of metallers grew up on The Big Four - and no matter what kind of songs they're writing now, few would dispute their almost life shaping defining influence. It's the first time Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax have shared a stage in 25 years. Only fitting then, that as many people as possible should get the chance to see them play together - it's an event few thought would ever come off. Will it work in the cinema format? There's no reason why not. Sam Dunn's _Headbangers Jouney_ doc was a decent romp, proving that the sub bass and surround sound of the cinema can almost equal a gig for kicks. If nothing else, it's ten times cheaper than the show itself. So yeah, it'll be a fantastic trip down memory lane. Just don't expect your work mates to understand. Win Tickets / Ciaran Treacy

Black Sun

Cork’s celebrated Black Sun night has, since its inception last year, been a hothouse of outer limits music, art and film weirdness down south and here it relocates to Dublin for an overdue, experimental trek through the looking glass. Topping the bill is German sound artist Sudden Infant, a visceral sonic cradle of creepazoid electronics, provocative posturing and dadaist improv. He is joined by Family Battle Snake, the bizzaro world sonic meanderings of Bill Kouligas who forages between the static and the fuzz for slivers of audio eeriness. Dublin’s own favoured noiseniks Toymonger complete the music line up, while there will also be a selection of avant-garde shorts screened on the night. BYOB but leave your preconceptions at the door. Aga and Sofia - Video Lovelies *Aga (left, Animators.ie) and Sofia (right, with baby Maya, MadArt Gallery) have joined forces for a Picnic with Short Movies night. They crack open their best tin of biscuits and explain all to le cool.*

Aga - We'll be sitting on blankets in the gallery and enjoying tea and sandwiches while we showcase short films. We have about an hour of footage but we are still open for submissions.

Animators.ie is a project I started a year ago. I wanted to build a community of people who are involved or interested in animation, a place where info and experiences can be exchanged

Sofia - I run the MadArt Gallery with my partner Hubert. We originally had a studio upstairs but took over the building as a gallery space in January. My background is in painting, Hubert is a graphic designer. We like to show baby Maya all the art, but all she smiles at is the fire extinguisher!
