Oprah started at WVTF-TV in Nashville. Tom Hanks helped out at the Cleveland Theatre Festival and Jodie Foster spent the summer of '82 at Esquire Magazine. Now (hold your breath!), we are in the market for an intern.

Roll footage! Do you have what it takes to be le cool's Next Top Intern? We are offering a minimum of a month's internship with us in South Studios. Help us put the magazine together, gain some publishing experience, take charge of your own projects and hopefully learn a little while teaching us old dogs some new tricks. For more info, please go HERE.

To help us in our search for our new office pal, to recharge our batteries for the weeks and months ahead and to help re-acquaint ourselves with the marvellous city, we won't be publishing an issue next week but will be having our summer staycation instead. But fear not, we will be back to normal the week after.

Who can't wait to say 'you're hired' this week? Ciaran or Michael?

Drop your cv into le cool.

These are Powers

These Are Powers polyrhythmic hydra head snaps with sweaty, dancefloor driven fervour – when every one beat is chopped off, two more appear. The New York/Chicago act crowbar post punk rhythms, clubby claustrophobia and buzzsaw riffs into a twitchy sonic straitjacket. Appropriate then that frontwoman Anna Barie occasionally likes to go off on one and writhe about on the floor amid the yelps and caterwauling, while bandmates, Pat Noecker (ex-Liars) and Bill Salas try to restrict the compositions’ structure to mere organised chaos. Perhaps These Are Powers greatest trick is the edgy sense of drama they bring to their aural tightrope act, somehow finding a sense of balance, when equilibrium is in short supply. Support from Cap Pas Cap, Thread Pulls and Grey Mayhem. Win Tickets / Mark Keane

Art Lee's taiko

Four years ago, sitting on the plateau of a mountainous region of central Japan at dusk, my hair stood on end as I heard the deep roll of a drum ricochet towards me. The next hour sent me into a head-spin as I witnessed the intoxicating Japanese drumming art form known as taiko. It was a local fire festival and while bonfires burst into flames around the perimeters, the crowd gathered together in reverence as the drummers held us spellbound with precision, energy and skill. It’s unlikely to see such an event in Ireland but tonight the stars have aligned as one of the leading taiko artists of our generation, Art Lee, takes to the stage at the axis theatre in Ballymun, with his ensemble Tokara. This is a rare opportunity to see a true master at work. Come along and enjoy the head-spin. Win Tickets / Fiona Murphy

Shamrock Rovers v Juventus

It feels surreal even to just say it. After years in the wilderness wandering around various dilapidated football grounds, the Hoops finally bedded down in the promised land of Tallafornia last season. For the most part, it's been thrilling. But this is the big one. If you're lucky enough to have a ticket, either you or your best mate/better half is already a seasoned ticketed Hoops fanatic. If not, The Maldron Hotel across the road will probably be the best place to watch the game. I like O'Connell's in Portobello - a lovely creamy pint, a complete gent at the bar and a nice screen at the back that you don't have to strain your neck at. Predictions? I've a funny feeling Gary Twigg will score at some stage over the two legs. If he does so tonight, that'll cover a few Morettis away against the Old Lady. / Eamon Sweeney

Calvin Johnson

Calvin Johnson was last seen on this isle two years ago, leading, pied piper-like, a group of eager followers through the foliage of Hideaway House’s backyard for a concert amidst the greenery. It’s a typical, spontaneous gesture for a man who has lived like an indie Zelig, playing a remarkable role in the emergence of the independent/diy scene in America, through his music (Beat Happening), production, label-running (K Records), djing, and ceaseless promotion of the underground ethos and aesthetic. Working outside the narrow corporate parameters of the music industry may not have made him a household name, but it has given him an authenticity and credibility that others would crave. Here he performs an all ages’ show with support from Patrick Kelleher, Laura Sheeran and Squarehead. / Mark Keane

Gaze Festival

In its 18th year, Gaze is a few months older than the law legalizing homosexuality in this state and is leading us beyond binary classifications and bipartisan politics to open up mature dialogue about the full spectrum of gender and sexuality. As programme director Yvonne O’Reilly says, “Gay film has become far more confident and sophisticated; in quality (film craft) and choice and treatment of themes.” To Die Like A Man (Portugal), which Yvonne describes as “an epic film, artfully made”, conflates many of these themes in one feature. Equally sophisticated and complex in addressing gender theory is the New Zealand documentary Assume Nothing. To revise your history of modern gay activism, Stonewall Uprisging is a must, and at the fun end of the scale who could resist twin lesbian Kiwi stand-up comics The Topp Twins? / Kay Scorah

Sean-Nós Singing and Dancing

One autumn night in 2004 in Lahinch, I accidentally invented my own sean-nós anthem. “She Never Texted Me Back” was a melancholic dirge about unrequited love and Vodafone. “Well, we kissed by moonlight and we had the craic/I asked her out to dinner but she never texted me back”. A seanchaí might disqualify me for singing in English and about modern things, but it's okay because I forgot all the words the next day. Perhaps if I'd attended a sean- nós workshop like the one that Gaelchultúr is sponsoring at Culture Box tonight, teens on Inis Oirr might be singing my ditty like it was The Cure. Sean-nós singing may be our greatest cultural form – it takes the memory of an elephant and the stoicness of a hedgehog – but it's crying out for a reboot. Heaven Is Under Construction

Now in its final week, the PhotoIreland team can sleep soundly in the knowledge that they did justice to all the big deal issues of the day, paid homage to a vast spectrum of emotion and provided a worthy stage for photographers great and small. If it was all a bit over-whelming, this month long visual assault of politics and poetry, out of the peripheries of the festival in the newly opened Severed Head Gallery lies the most levelling of shows by German photographer Mirjam Siefert. An ode to tiny detail, to the ordinary fabric of everyday life and to the splendid minutiae captured in a run-of-the-mill blink is the focus of Siefert’s gaze. Wonders from the corner of her eye and precious, mundane moments with people around her; in glances and in snippets, maybe the nicest way to say goodbye to the festival. / Jeanette Farrell

Late Night Friday With Billy the Crisp

Listen, conventional stand-up comedy is dead. It died the second Des Bishop started appearing on your ESB bills and it ain't coming back. It's time to move on to other sources of mirth and Late Night Friday With Billy the Crisp might just be the answer. OK, we haven't seen the show yet but if the insane flicks of Hugh Cooney (you haven't seen Accesorize? You haven't lived), the epilepsy-inducing vids of Enda MacNalley and the enthusiastic nonsense of Cian Hallinan's previous shows are anything to go by, this should be a great leap forward in Irish giggles. Whatever happens you can be guaranteed that it will be absolutely nothing like your regular comedy night. No jokes about LIDL, the recession or airline food. No impersonations of Eddie Hobbes. And absolutely no corporate sponsorship. Win Tickets / Pete O'Grady

The Kit 'n' Caboodle

Weekend markets seem to be ten-a-penny in Dublin all of a sudden. Whether it’s antique furniture, second-hand clothes, old records or cheese and olives you’re after, somewhere around town there’s a stall for you. What we like about the Kit 'n' Caboodle is that it involves people selling their own creations instead of their cast-offs. It also helps that there’s live music and cheap drinks so you can have a booze or even a bop while you browse. The Pod’s outdoor area is filled with stalls selling art, jewellery, ornaments, clothes and all sorts of other handmade goods from Irish and international craft-makers for this monthly event. But be warned: shopping under the influence can be dangerous. / Anne Hayden

Haiti Lives

Farmers huddle around a honeycomb, learning the finer points of beekeeping. A young man with a wide smile cuts down sugar cane while a woman elegantly processes flour. Six months after the devastating earthquake in Haiti, this exhibition highlights the efforts to rebuild and recover. Photojourbalist Ami Vitale wants to tell a story of about hope and determination through the 30 images, and she succeeds. Vitale's work is reaffirming and it highlights the unyielding spirit of the Haitian people. It's hardly surprising that South Asian Journalists Association presented her with the Daniel Pearl Award for outstanding reporting. Also on show here as part of this Oxfam Ireland exhibition is auctionable furniture that has been re-upholstered by various artists/designers including Angela Scanlon, Blanaid Hennessy and Kevin Sharkey. / Luka Scoones

Pivotal to the ever-blossoming italo/electro Dublin scene, Lunar Disko is celebrating its fourth birthday with a proper tear-up in the sweaty confines of Twisted Pepper’s Basement. Despite its tender years, Lunar has undoubtedly left an indelible mark on local clubbing, turning on patrons to artists of the calibre of Alden Tyrell, Bangkok Impact, The Hasbeens, Legowelt, Intergalactic Gary and David Vunk, and bravely venturing beyond the realms of the dancefloor with its Lunar Disko Records label. To mark the special occasion Marco Passarani - label boss, dj, impresario – will showcase his glittering Detroit techno and Chicago house as seen through an Italian prism. Admiral Black

Not content with releasing album number two, with ace Dublin gurriers Humanzi last February, mercurial frontman Shaun Mulrooney returns to Dublin to promote his latest project; Admiral Black. The Donaghmede multi-instrumentalist was braving a harsh Berlin winter, writing and working on demos until AIR, The The and Jeff Beck collaborator Earl Harvin kicked his arse into the studio. With Harvin on drums and desk and Mulrooney on everything else, the result is a quality bag of tunes that cover garage to kraut, psychedelia to punk and all that lingers in-between. Support on the night comes from Talulah Does The Hula and The Murder Clues. Following support slots of his own with The Fall and The Dead Weather, this is the Admiral's first headline on a Dublin deck. If you miss this you may as well walk the plank! A-Team

First things first - suspend all belief in logic before watching this film. Leave your brain at the door - Inception it ain't. Do this and you will be rewarded with some seriously explosive summer blockbuster eye-candy. Coming on like a hyperactive montage of montages, with its ridiculous quips and one-liners, and jaw/brain-dropping action sequences, there is little let-up from the opening volleys "somewhere in Mexico" to the frankly outrageous docklands stunts and ammo ending. The quartet who play the A-Team seem to be having a tank barrel of fun - especially the manic Sharlto Copley (Wikus from District 9) who plays the deranged Murdock. Having taken ten years and a football team of writers to complete this juggernaut, there is much to deride - but wasn't it the same with the original TV series? / Simon Judge

Jens Lekman

The soft-like-velvet voiced Gothenburg crooner returns to Dublin with his sample infused guitar pop, kicking off his first European tour in two years. When talent, wit, charm, and humility were handed out, Jens' cup was filled to the brim. The über-talented songsmith takes the earnestness of Arthur Russell and blends it with the humour of Jonathan Richman, straddling a fine line between pure unadulterated pop and bittersweet torch songs. Having only released two albums proper (When I Said I Wanted to Be Your Dog in 2004, Night Falls Over Kortedala in 2007), his prolificity has found a release in the form of EP's, singles, covers, and internet exclusives. A recent mixtape caused internet meltdown as it was the first we had heard from the Swedish gent in a long time. Download his new song for free HERE. Win Tickets / Simon Judge

Étienne de Crécy

Étienne de Crécy or Étienne De Sweaty as I care to remember from previous encounters. Erm, there's the time in the Temple Bar Music Centre - dripping. Oh and that time in the Red Box - soaked to the bones. While most other memories are a bit of haze, the super sexy slinky beats of _Prix Choc_ live on from his seminal _Super Discount_ release. Who would have thought that a TV show sample of an actor saying _'sensimilla, marijuana'_ would prove so hypnotic to someone on ecstasy? Sweaty Etty, that's who. What's he been doing of late? Wikipedia seems to have given up on him after his _Tempovision_ release in 2002 but he has been playing out of a funky cube structure recently (though I can't see it fitting in the TP). Man With a Movie Camera

Comrades! Reject predictable bourgeois notions of narrative, and overcome your attachment to manufactured movie stars. Take warm clothes and waterproof stuff to sit on. Talk to your neighbours (but not during the movie, of course). Be amazed at the power of music alone to add meaning to the astounding imagery in Man With a Movie Camera (1929), a film which is not only silent, but completely non-verbal, having no caption cards. I haven't seen this since 1972 and, while I may occasionally forget what I had for breakfast, some of the images and effects from this film have stayed with me for almost 40 years. Back then, we played ELO as a soundtrack (look 'em up, kids), this time I'm looking forward to the tailor-made interpretative genius of 3epkano. Gainsbourg

Serge Gainsbourg's life was perhaps almost too complicated to be satisfactorily served by film. However, Joann Sfar's Gainsbourg Vie héroïque illustrates some of those complications, which all began with growing up Jewish in a Nazi-occupied Paris. His early sense of being an outsider fuelled all that he did; and the need to provoke, as he walked a tightrope, both emotionally and creatively, was the only criteria he was interested in for living a meaningful life. We see moments of joy where he is lost in creation and connection, and it is not acceptance from the French Establishment that he is looking for (see his reggae version of Le Marseillaise), but unconditional love and truth, wherever he can get it. Luckily, he sometimes inhabits this, as does Eric Elmosnino who astonishingly portrays the rebellious Gainsbourg. / Siobhán Kane

2 many DJs? "Apparently not if these are back again," snarks my mate when I told him our Belgian friends were back (again). "But then why would they still be coming here if no one wanted to see them?" I said, knowing deep down that when it comes to the fig in the fig roll - our Belgian friends take the biscuit. However, when it comes to consistent crowd-pleasing these boys deliver the house-party enhancers. The _As Heard on Radio Soulwax_ series dared to genre-hop with instinctive ease finding a funhouse where timeless classics got it on with hot off the press bootlegs. Throw in a few visuals and you have what's simply called a good time. "Maybe we approach these boys in the same way as happy memories from a perpetual hangover," concluded my mate. 2 many mates? Toy Story 3

It’s no surprise that Toy Story 3, like its predecessors, is as squarely aimed at adults as it is at kids - indeed anyone who recognises that Fisher Price phone is probably heading for middle age. In this instalment, Andy has outgrown his toys and is moving away to college. After a mix-up, Buzz, Woody et al end up being donated to a day care centre which is run by a creepy tyrant teddy bear. And so the movie becomes an escape thriller with action, suspense, plenty of laughs - mostly courtesy of Barbie and a very metrosexual Ken – as well as the inevitable tears, not to mention a truly terrifying Baby Doll. It’s got some pretty dark underlying themes but hopefully the kids will see it less as a rumination on mortality and more as a rollicking adventure. The 3D seems unnecessary but at least the glasses hide the tears at the end. / Anne Hayden

Something Tells Me It’s All Happening At The Zoo

Which animal best matches your character traits? Are you a wise person, happier at night and capable of turning your head nearly 270 degrees? An owl! Are you predatory, the master of all you survey and do you hum when satisfied? A tiger! Or are you a messed up kid, half quacked but plenty of beaver? A Duck-billed Platypus!! Eitherway, you should shuffle your human feet to this animal-themed exhibition and catch some of these contemporary delights. Vanessa Donoso Lopez's surreal swim-hat-wearing oddities brought a smile to my face as did Jonathan Mayhew’s very timely Otto the Otter sings Bonnie Prince Billie whose inspiration plays a sold out Whelan’s this week (Billie, not the Otter). Hard Rain

'Oh, where have you been, my blue-eyed son?' So begins the Hard Rain Exhibition, a collection of photography that attempts to weave the world's suffering around the lyrics of Bob Dylan's A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall. 'I heard one person starve, I heard many people laughin'. An image, matched to each line, shows how man has impacted on the planet and each other. Deforestation, drought, human suffering, the exhibition communicates all these problems into a single call for action. 'And I'll tell it, and think it, and speak it, and breathe it'. Seen by millions around the world, the exhibition is part of a global project to create 'a new human mentality' before man lurches into an inescapable crisis. Dylan was speaking of the fear of nuclear winter in his song – now we fear a never-ending one. 'And it's a hard, It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.' / Hugh Torpey

Enjoy a spot of otherworldly peace in St Kevin’s Park, just metres from the bustle of Camden Street, close to Whelan's. A former cemetery, the consecrated grounds are alive with history, yet unassuming with ivy-clad charm. Dating back to the 13th century, the cemetery was popular with body snatchers in the 17th century, and final resting place for victims of the famine and cholera in the 18th and 19th centuries. Reputedly some of the park's permanent residents are not so restful - one of its most infamous spirits that of cursed Bishop Dermot Hurley. Ene and Niall - Planetary Promoters Ene Keenan and Niall Coughlan are the intergalactic duo behind Tenth Planet. Their pop-up parties and electro gigs have been rocking found spaces all year.

We started to see the creativity in other areas of the arts and wanted to bring that to the music we love. It was really born out of the idea to stop talking about doing things but actually getting up off our arses to do it properly.

We have good nights and bad nights but you always hope that people enjoy themselves. We've done big and small gigs, you start off with an idea that's big and try and make it happen with what you have. We do the gigs that we'd like to go to ourselves.

We love doing gigs in found spaces, BYOB nights that give people different options to come party and hear the music. We've experimented this year with different ways to put on the nights and we think we've got a good thing going now.

Next PopUp is Creamy Goodness, July 30th in Space54. 7- late. BYOB, €10. See HERE for more.
