Rialto Twirlers
In
Rialto Twirlers, Anne Maree Barry presents a short film which interprets the last rehearsal before a competition for a young troupe. For a year,
Barry shadowed the Twirlers. At majorette competitions, she observed their aesthetic visual qualities, their music and sense of community. Barry references, through close ups, some tools of the trade - baton, pom poms, glittering jazz shoes and meticulously groomed hair while beautiful hi-angle shots capture their synchronized routines. Another vital element is the soundtrack which uses tone washes and rhythmic clusters, plucked from actual performances. The overall effect is the blurring of art and seemingly everyday things. For Glee and social documentary fans alike, do your best to pass the baton and head down to The Lab to catch this intimate and intriguing exhibition. /
