Children Who Chase Lost Voices...Q&A
Believe it or not, it is possible to create beautiful and moving anime outside of Studio Ghibli. Director Makato Shinkai has been garnering himself a reputation for such work, particularly with his latest release. Combining fantastical elements from Ghibli works with the more hard-hitting, weapon-toting approach of Akira, Children Who Chase Lost Voices is at once a profoundly unusual and enchanting film. It follows a young girl as she voyages to a world beyond her own, dealing tenderly with our inherent longing for the people we have lost, and the impact that our desires have on the world around us. In typical anime style, certain elements of the plot struck me as whimsical and irrelevant, however this was generally an afterthought when faced with animation of such heartbreaking loveliness.
