Build Something Modern
Irish architects and their 'modernist mission' in Africa in the '50s and '60s concern this new documentary from Still Films, who last brought us the polyester delight that was Pyjama Girls. Build Something Modern tells the tale of how those frustrated by the lack of breakthrough opportunities and projects were embraced in the likes of Kampala and Lagos. Hipstamatic style shots are spliced with archive footage, drawings and a hypnotically woozy soundtrack by Dennis McNulty with inspired editing. Inextricably linked to the role of missionaries in Africa, this is an exotic tale with a homely feel. Build Something Modern is a fitting testament to the towering achievements of both the architects of these buildings and Paul Rowley, Nicky Gogan and Maya Derrington, who unearthed their untold story. / Michael McDermott
